Applications and Future of Nanodiamond
The Institute of Physics of USSR synthesized the first nanodiamond using the detonation method in the mid- and late 80s in the 20th century. The scientists in Germany and the US later achieved similar syntheses. In the 1990s, several lines with yearly production capacity of ten thousand carats of nanodiamonds were built in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. The synthesis technique has been improved further since 1990, where the importance of application, the principal element for nanodiamond business development, progressively surfaced. The focus of scientific research on nanodiamond worldwide has also transitioned to the exploration of its applications accordingly. There are already substantial results that demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing nanodiamond in the following areas:
- Nanodiamond used in thermal conducting and heat sink interface materials
- Nanodiamond in composite electroplating & electroless plating
- Nanodiamonds used in lubrication oil and as additive in cutting fluid
- Application of nanodiamonds in biomedical technology and chemistry
- Fabrication of nanodiamond composite metallic materials
- Application of composites of nanodiamond and polymer
